Overweight? No Food For You In Mississippi Restaurants

Never let it be said the people in Mississippi are not trying, but the latest law proposed by the state legislature is going to meet some heavy resistance. Sorry for the pun, but the Mississippi legislature has proposed a new ordinance barring restaurants from serving obese people. House Bill 282 requires dining establishments with seating capacity of five or more to follow guidelines set by the state's health department to determine a prospective customer's obesity, turning away those considered too fat to serve.

Considering the weight of a large number of Americans, I suspect most restaurants in the state will be out of business long before their patrons lose enough weight to qualify for service. Maybe they should just have fat people eat in the back of the restaurant. Separate but equal?

Obscene Oil Profits - $40+ Billion For Exxon-Mobil

It’s hard to not be shocked by the record profit posted by Exxon-Mobil this week. It is the largest in the history of any US company. $40.6 billion dollars is a lot of money by any standard, and though I have no problem with a company making an honest profit, this figure is obscene.

When people are struggling to make ends meet, charging $3.00 and up a gallon for gas is putting a real hardship on lots of people who have no alternative by to fuel their cars with gasoline in order to get to their jobs.

Back in the late 40’s and 50’s the internal combustion cartel headed by General Motors began buying up the countries Inter-Urban rail systems and other light rail mass transit systems. GM specifically had started a PR push in the pate 1930’s to characterize mass transit as undignified and not family friendly. Their massive Futurama pavilion at both the 1939 and 1964 New York World’s Fairs emphasized this tone and today all but a few historic light rail lines remain. The family car became an icon to be aspired to and the only “reasonable” method of transportation.

By buying into the GM dream, Americans became dependant on gasoline, and that worked just fine with the directors of the big corporations who sold petroleum products. Today we are reaping the seeds of that dream. The oil companies are making more money than they had ever imagined, and we poor suckers who call ourselves American’s are stuck with the bill. Deregulation has assured the oil companies that they can continue to charge as much as they wish for gasoline with impunity.

They will point to oil at $100 a barrel and plead that they had no choice but to raise gas prices. The truth is much simpler, they are greedy and by tagging their profits to a percentage of the cost of oil their profits rise as does the price of oil. They know we have no choice but to keep paying whatever they charge, like junkies strung out on heroin, we will pay whatever the pusher wants.

Now our President has even admitted that we need to get off our dependence on foreign oil, but the truth is he and his entire administration are mere lackeys for the oil industry. If you don’t believe this, just try to find out who Dick Cheney consulted when writing national energy policy. The stonewalling betrays the fact that big oil wrote the law and now we just have to live with it.

So how can we change this spiral of emptying our pockets to line the coffers of big oil? Well buying more efficient vehicles is a start, A Hybrid car is a measure that really works, but the real solution will be to develop electric cars and alternative fuel vehicles that decrease greenhouse gasses and use no petroleum products. Additionally, a national high speed rail transportation system as well as local light rail mass transit can drastically reduce the cost and pollution being generated by our addiction to gasoline.

Now the first question would be, “how do we pay for such a system?” One answer would be to insist that oil companies either accept government regulation or a massive oil profit tax. The shareholders of Exxon Mobil would balk, but if they only made $20 billion this year instead of $40 billion they would sitill be in record profit territory.

Call me a socialist if you will , but something has to be done and private industry has shown, especially in the petroleum sector, that they are interested only in robbing the public blind. It’s time to end the Regan era deregulation myth and get back to a country that is run for the “common good’ as opposed to the “corporate greed”.

Mentally Disabled Women Used As Human Bombs In Iraq

If the idea of human bombs isn’t enough, how about this twist? Guerilla factions in Iraq are strapping explosives to mentally disabled women and detonating them via cell phone. To make matters worse, they are doing it on the Muslim Holy Day. If that was not enough, the attacks took place in a giant outdoor pet market in Baghdad.

Explosives wrapped with steel ball bearings were strapped to the women’s bodies and they were sent into the markets. Iraqi’s government spokespeople detailed the story and said the women probably didn’t know they were human bombs. True to form, the US government calls the attacks suicide bombings and blames Al Qaida.

Additionally the Iraq death toll is higher than that given by the US authorities.
So we have a heartless inhuman crime being made worse by twisting the facts. Who is telling the truth? My guess is this time it’s the Iraqis.

MoveOn Endorses Obama

Looks like MoveOn.org has seen the light. They held an online poll for a presidential nominee and Barack Obama won with a 70.4% lead. The sign is clear, motivated voters will carry Obama to the White House. Comments on the MoveOn.org website from members and people being polled are overwhelming.

The following is from a young woman in New Jersey.

"I've never felt so strongly about any one candidate in my entire life. He's truly an inspiration to all of us—especially the younger generation. I will stand by him 100% for as long as he's willing to stand up and fight for this country!"

That is a ringing endorsement and because of thousands more like that, MoveOn.org has endorsed Obama for the Democratic nominee.

Here’s my take on it. Hillary Clinton is a good woman and probably would make a capable President, however she is a polarizing figure and cannot bring the kind of enthusiasm Obama can to an election. Look at the totals in the recent primaries. Record number of voters and most of the new ones voting for Obama. In a national election those numbers are power and they can effectively fight the right-wing evangelical vote in the South and the conservatives across the country. Obama will infuse new energy into the Democratic Party and he is the right choice.

Straight Students Sue Florida High School For Right To Support Gay Rights

The more I speak with young people the more I am encouraged about the future of our country. It seems today’s generation of young adults is not hung up with many of the prejudices that were present in my generation. Not to say bigotry is gone, but it’s on the decline.

A case in point comes from Ponce de Leon High School in Northern Florida. In that school, a young lesbian was being harassed. When she brought the matter up to the principal, he told her to stop wearing gay pride T-shirts. Not much of a solution, but it s Florida. In the meantime some of her straight friends came to her cause and began to wear slogans such as “I Support My Gay Friends”. The school cracked down on them as well. Now the students have taken it to the ACLU. In the words of a straight student Heather Gillman, a 16-year-old junior at the school. "Nobody should have to worry about being kicked out of school just for having a rainbow sticker on your notebook."

The ACLU agreed and has taken up the case and sought an injunction to stop Ponce de Leon High School officials from suppressing students' First Amendment rights in the future. For some students at the school the issue of gay rights in not just a gay issue, and that is a hopeful sign.

Britney Back In Psych Hospital

Watching the news about Britney Spears is like watching a train wreck in slow motion, I just can’t turn away even though I know it’s going to be horrible. Hauled to a hospital again last night, Britney is being held for observation. But Britney being Britney, she can’t even go to a hospital without an entourage.

Her ambulance was escorted by police motorcycles, two cruisers, and two helicopters. How can you not watch that? Her recent affair with a paparazzo, shows how far down the rabbit hole she has gone. The very kind of person who is making her life a nightmare is the person she chooses to date. Now that is a pathological problem.

This time I hope Dr. Phil stays home and a real specialist has a look at her. Committing her involuntarily seems a good idea to me. Maybe that way she can stay out of the limelight and really get some help and much needed therapy.

Giuliani Endorses McCain

Just watched Rudy Giuliani speaking from the Regan Library endorsing John McCain for the GOP nominee. I have to think Giuliani may not be the best person to endorses McCain, since a lot of conservatives really don't like him, but I guess McCain sees it as a chance to look like a moderate. He is anything but a moderate, but that's a different story.

On another note Giuliani doesn't understand how the government works. He referred to McCain as a great choice for "Commander in Chief of the country." Well Rudy, contrary to what you and Bush think, the President is only Commander in Chief of the military!

John Edwards Dropping Out

CNN is reporting that John Edwards will drop out of the Presidential race. He is expected to make the announcement at 1:00pm Eastern Time this afternoon in New Orleans. More soon.

Bush Adds Unconstitutional Signing Statement to Defense Bill

After pressuring Congress to change the original version of the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act President Bush added a “signing statement” to his signature of the bill which according to his legal team allows him to ignore key parts of the law.

Here are a few things Bush has decided he does not want to follow.

1. Setting up a a commission to probe contracting fraud in Iraq and Afghanistan.
2. Expanding protections for whistleblowers who work for government contractors.
3. Require U.S. intelligence agencies to promptly respond to congressional requests for documents.
4. Bar funding for permanent bases in Iraq and for any action that exercises U.S. control over Iraq’s oil money.

As a further outrage, he has added a “Declaration of Principles for a Long-Term Relationship of Cooperation and Friendship” between Iraq and the United States.

This is most likely unconstitutional since it was enacted without the agreement of the legislation branch and the President cannot enter into treaties without approval of Congress.

Looks like Bush is really trying to do the most outrageously illegal things he can in his last year at the White House. His next residence should be a prison, but unfortunately it will probably be here in Dallas. Oh joy!

McCain Uses Robo Calls To Gay-Bait in Florida

Same song different singer. John McCain is using a robo-call to pull a gay-baiting trick on Romney in Florida. It’s the same kind of tactic that was used to torpedo McCain in his last run for the White House.

The call goes like this:

"Mitt Romney thinks he can fool us. He supported abortion on demand, even allowed a law mandating taxpayer-funding for abortion. He says he changed his mind, but he still hasn't changed the law. He told gay organizers in Massachusetts he would be a stronger advocate for special rights than even Ted Kennedy. Now, it's something different."

That line “Special Rights” is the code word used by the Republicans whenever they want to target the GLBT community. They figure that any rights awarded to gays or lesbians must be “special” and therefore worthy of contempt. IN the GOP vernacular, only rights that are given to citizens of heterosexual orientation are human rights. Anyone else is asking them to bend the rules.

This is the old tyranny of the “norm” that permeates GOP thinking. If you vary from what they consider the normal state for human beings, that is white, Christian and heterosexual, then you are “abnormal”. It is an old illusion and it’s time to stop it in its tracks. That McCain is using this kind of crap is proof that he is wrong for America and very wrong for GLBT Americans.

I sincerely hope the Republican voters of Florida can see through this crude and bigoted attempt. But then again, if they did, they might decide to vote Democratic!

McCain Abandons His Post as Senator of Arizona - Skips State of the Union

I have to find it interesting that one of the few high points of the State of the Union fiasco last night was who attended. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were both in attendance, taking time from their campaign trail to do their duty and attend the speech representing their constituents as Senators. Meanwhile, John McCain, Senator from Arizona was AWOL. He was campaigning in Florida, apparently attempting to distance himself from Bush and the stinking odor his name leaves on every Republican candidate.

Interesting that McCain shirked his duty as a Senator and both Democratic front runners attended. That says something about principals and duty. McCain skipping out shows his real agenda. He has no problem brushing off his constituents and going after the voters in Florida to forward his own agenda of getting elected President. That shows a raw lust for power and that’s a dangerous thing in a President. We already have that problem in the White House and the last thing we need is a replay of the last 4 years.

SOTU Live Blog 3

Now he is talking about what else? September 11!

He has explained that we are bogged down in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq because we are "spreading the hope of freedom."

He got a standing ovation from the GOP only and a very tame one at that. I just can't do this anymore. He is making me want to chew my computer!

SOTU Live Blog 2

Another line another lie. Bush just spoke about the tax breaks he instituted that benefit toe richest Americans. He describes it as follows:

We have other work to do on taxes. Unless the Congress acts, most of the tax relief we have delivered over the past 7 years will be taken away. Some in Washington argue that letting tax relief expire is not a tax increase. Try explaining that to 116 million American taxpayers who would see their taxes rise by an average of $1,800.

That is like the old joke, Bill Gates walks into a bar and everyones average income goes up $20,000,000.

I am not sure I can take any more of this crap!

SOTU Live Part 1

Bush opened his speech with a "booga booga" implying that the 110th Congress had to make the right decision to assure the security of the country. He is referring to the FISA law and the extension being debated, Obviously, Bush wants it changed,. He wants his illegal activities made legal by a new law.

Hope he doesn't get it.

Live Blogging Tonight During SOTU Speach

I’m planning to blog live during the State of the Union address tonight. It should be fun to do a fact check as the President speaks. I suspect I will be busy since Bush has a real problem with facts.

Hope to see you all there.

Writers Sign Deal WIth Marvel and Lionsgate

The writer’s strike is beginning to crack the monolith block of producers. The latest companies to pen an agreement with the striking WGA are Lionsgate and Marvel Studios. These studios join the list of producers who have already reached agreements with the writers. The others include the Weinstein Company, United Artists, Worldwide Pants, Spyglass Entertainment, MRC, Jackson Bites, Mandate Films, and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment.

The agreement puts a few Marvel projects back into production and will aid in the release of several films scheduled for this summer. Let’s hope the other producers follow suit soon. I am darned tired of re-runs!

NASA Scientist Says White House Edits All Scientific Testimony

Republican have long been known to create their own reality, but it’s starting to affect the rest of us and that is a big problem. NASA scientist James Hansen has stated that the White House edits and reviews all testimony by government scientists. That means the White House is manipulation the data reported by scientists to jibe with the party line. Every day our government sounds more and more like the old Soviet Union.

Hansen’s story is reported in a NY Times story saying that the government has tried numerous times to silence him. Luckily he has refused to be squelches and has spoken out to tell the truth. Truth if you will remember is the GOP’s enemy.

Obama Is Still Not A Muslim - The Email That Won't Die

Despite the emails, Barack Obama is not a Muslim. He is a member of the United Church of Christ and pledges allegiance just like the rest of us. Despite the truth, there is an email circulating that just won’t die. It reads like a paranoid diatribe from a GOP operative, but according to the Obama campaign it does not appear to have been a deliberate political ploy.

The truth may be more dark than a political trick. Apparently this lie filled has its origin, according to a report in The Nation, in an August 2004 press release from an obscure conservative publicist. Another little-known conservative author – who had also speculated that John McCain was a KGB agent – regurgitated the charges in December of 2006, and from there they rapidly made their way into the widely circulated e-mails. The fact that they continue to circulate is the dark part. It shows a general xenophobia that is shared by many Americans. Though Obama is American, his name may seem strange to some people and so, based only on the sound of his name, they are willing to believe the lies.

Though the Obama campaign has actively refuted the false email, it still circulates. I was sent a copy by a friends sister who wanted to know if I thought it was real. What I sent her was a reply which I hope will circulate as well. The email I returned follows this blog, and it is my hope that she and her friends will circulate it as freely as the one filled with hatred and lies.

Feel free to copy it and send it to your friends and relatives. Maybe, just maybe we can diffuse the viral campaign that is spreading so much misinformation.

Dear Friend,

I read the email you sent me and felt compelled to reply. You see, that email was designed to spread lies about Barack Obama and does not have a shred of truth to it. Here is the real story and if you do a little research on the web you will find it is true.

Barack Obama is not a Muslim. He has attended Trinity United Church of Christ on 95th Street on the South Side of Chicago for over 20 years with his family. He is a Christian and a native born American citizen.

He pledges allegiance to our flag and leads that pledge often in Congress. His hand rested on his family bible when he was sworn in as a Senator from Illinois and he has no other allegiances than to our country.

He is being attacked with these lies because he is different. His skin is darker, his name is unusual and he represents a threat to the radical right-wing faction that has tried to control Washington. The attacks are bigotry, plain and simple and as such are not worthy of your consideration.

I know you to be an honest and sincere American, and you believe in the principals that made our country great. Barack Obama shares that with you, and as a fellow American he deserves to be treated with equality and fairness. Whether you vote for him or not, I know you would not want to be responsible for spreading hatred and lies. So I ask you to share this email with your friends and family in an effort to set the record straight and stop the insidious effects of the disinformation campaign.

Sincerely,

Hardy Haberman

Obama Wins S.C. By A Landslide!

Watching the Obama victory speech in South Carolina, I was very encouraged. Not just because I feel Obama is the best candidate in the field of Democrats right now, but because I saw so many young faces in the crowd at his rally. I have not seen this kind of participation by young people since I was a child. Back then it was John F. Kennedy who energized the youth of America, and though I was just a kid, I still remember him speaking and stirring something in myself as well.

Obama’s win was a landslide, and the number of voters more than doubled the total number of voters in the last presidential primary in South Carolina. That shows the energy he brings to the party and if we are going to take back our country, we will need that kind of energy and participation. I hope Super Tuesday is another such victory for Obama.

NY Times Slams Giuliani - Endorses McCain

You would think a paper like the New York Times would endorse heir home town boy for GOP nominee. Instead they are backing, albeit with many reservations, John McCain. Why are they disserting the Mayor who has become synonymous with 9-11 and was called at one time “America’s Mayor”? Well this passage from the Times editorial might give you a clue.

“The real Mr. Giuliani, whom many New Yorkers came to know and mistrust, is a narrow, obsessively secretive, vindictive man who saw no need to limit police power. Racial polarization was as much a legacy of his tenure as the rebirth of Times Square.”
Wow! And to top it off they go on to detail his bad judgement in firing Police Commissioner William Bratton, known to be the architect of NYC’s successful plan to reduce crime. Giuliani dumped him in favor of a friend, Bernard Kerik, who has now been indicted on fraud and corruption charges.

Now with the Florida Primary looming, it’s Rudy’s last stand, and I give him 9-11 odds against him. Perhaps his 15 minutes of fame will come to an end next week.

As for Democrats, the Times endorses Hillary Clinton. Not my choice but as the Senator from NY it is not surprising.

Human "Pet" and Trainer Tossed From Bus In London

I always find it interesting how people find ways to discriminate against sexual minorities. On the other hand I also find it interesting how little respect some folks in our community have for others sensibilities. My case in point is one that happened last week in London.

Tasha Maltby enjoys living the role of “pet” for her boyfriend and Master. She also dresses in what we in America call “Goth” style. Recently she and her Master were thrown off a bus in London when the driver refused to allow her on wearing a collar and on a leash. He stated flatly, “we don't let freaks and dogs like you on.”

No I have to hand it to the bus driver for recognizing her role as a pet or dog, but his instance that they get off was a bit much. Additionally, the couples insistence in carrying their role-play into a public and very much “non-consensual” space seems at fault here as well. Having a BDSM scene in public may be fun, but it does not respect the sensibilities of strangers. That said, I have done scenes in public before, but they were always “stealth” scenes where to the casual observer, nothing very odd was happening.

What this incident does is drive home two important points. First that we as a community are a sexual minority and as such face discrimination. For a lot of people, particularly straight BDSM folks, the subject rarely comes up. However incidents like this highlight the very real discrimination BDSM people can face, no matter what their sexual orientation. Second this reminds us that public spaces are rarely the right spots for a scene. Just as sex in a public place is a bad idea, so is a BDSM scene, at least a visual one like this one.

The good thing is the bus company said it apologized if the couple felt they had been discriminated against. Now I wonder if the couple has apologized to the people they dragged into their scene without consent?

Kucinich Introduces Impeachment Articles January 28

Dennis Kucinich will present Articles of Impeachment against President Bush on January 28. He accuses the administration of lying to the American public and leading the country into a war illegally.

The day of the introduction is no accident. The same day as the State of the Union speech is a sweet irony for Kucinich. As he has said, “We know the State of the Union,” he declared. “It’s a lie.”

Write your Congressperson and support the Impeachment Resolution and maybe we can get it back on the table before it is too late.

Fox's John Gibson - Mocks Death of Heath Ledger

Sometimes the term “scumbag” gets redefined. This time it is by the Fox radio “personality” John Gibson. His mocking of the death of Heath Ledger was so far beyond anything tasteless I have heard he has reserved himself a place beside the word “scumbag” in the dictionary.

Here is some of his “humor” as noted on ThinkProgress.org.

Playing an audio clip of the iconic quote, “I wish I knew how to quit you” from Ledger’s gay romance movie Brokeback Mountain, Gibson disdainfully quipped, “Well, he found out how to quit you.” Laughing, Gibson then played another clip from Brokeback Mountain in which Ledger said, “We’re dead,” followed by his own, mocking “We’re dead” before playing the clip again.

Gibson is not only tasteless, his “jokes” must feel pretty funny to Ledger’s family. My question to Gibson, whose death would Jesus mock? Time to get Gibson and the entire Fox network off the public air waves.

Stephen Colbert Salutes Civil Rights - An Amazing Show

If you didn’t watch Stephen Colbert last night you missed a fantastic piece of history. As part of his Martin Luther King tribute, Colbert gave a history of the Charleston Hospital workers union strike of 1969. Through archive photos and footage, Colbert told the story of how the civil rights struggle that manifested itself as the strike was settled. The key players in the settlement were Andrew Young, part of Dr. King’s inner circle and the newly-appointed vice-president of the medical college James Colbert.

If you noticed a similarity in the name it’s no coincidence, turns out it was Stephen Colbert’s father and to prove the point the camera tilts down the photo of James Colbert to show his son, Stephen. As further connection to the events, Colbert’s guest for the evening was Andrew Young himself. It was great television! Their interview discussed those events from 1969 but segued easily into the Writer’s Strike and how Colbert might start the behind-the-scenes work to start settling the strike. It isn’t often you are encouraged to do great things by a hero of the Civil Rights movement.

In typical Colbert Show fashion the interview ended with a musical finale featuring not only Andrew Young and Malcolm Gladwell (Stephens other guest) as well as the Harlem Gospel Choir singing “Go Down Moses”. Watch It!

Plastics May Be Making Us Fatter

OK, I admit it I’m fat. Call me a bear, hefty or overweight, but the sad truth is I have a mid section that bulges and so far exercise and diet haven’t made it vanish. Now it looks like I might have been fighting a losing battle due to something beyond my control. In a recent study researchers are finding that many obese people have elevated levels of plastics in their bodies. No really, plastics!

The chemicals known as endocrine disrupters mimic natural hormones that control weight gain. So what does this mean? Well scientist I the study say our modern overweight problem is the result of too much food and not enough exercise and perhaps the addition of substances we ingest either voluntarily or inadvertently.

The rest of the story is in the Boston Globe.

Heath Ledger - Dead at 28

Actor Heath Ledger is dead at 28. CNN news just reported he was found dead in his apartment in New York by authorities. Pills were found near his body, but no autopsy has been performed yet. A tragic loss of a very talented actor.

Fred Thompson as Willie Loman - Death of a GOP Salesman?

Has anyone noticed except me? Every time I look at Fred Thompson I keep seeing Willie Loman. Fred is a candidate perusing a dream that is just not going to happen. I knew it the moment I saw him speak and I think everyone else knows it as well.

Thompson might be a good actor and a nice guy, but he is not a President. Of course the same could be said for George Bush, the fake folksy stuff qualifies as acting, the problem is he actually is President. How the hell that happened is a matter for discussion. For Thompson, his dream of the White House seems driven as much by the hopes of the GOP to find a movement conservative who could carry the primaries as his zeal to win. The word zeal is misplaced here, because when I listen to him speak, I can’t help hearing that tired edge to his voice. His platitudes are equally as tired and overall he looks like a candidate on the way out.

The news media is expecting his “I am dropping out” speech soon. Besides, who could vote for that face?
UPDATE: And Willie Loman goes off quietly into the night. Fred Thompson has dropped out of the GOP race.

Think Tanks and Other Deep Thoughts

As I was reading the latest diatribe from the Family Research Council I realized that even though this group, founded by James Dobson, is blatantly fundamentalist and far right, they continue to get lots of press both in print and broadcast. On MSNBC, arguably not the most liberal news source, I listened to a discussion between Family Research Council's Tony Perkins, political analyst Lawrence O'Donnell and MSNBC host Dan Abrams. They were discussing Mike Huckabee’s stump speech and specifically the part where he says, “But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God. And that's what we need to do, is to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view of how we treat each other, and how we treat their families."

The political analyst and host were cautious with this claim. Tony Perkins, however, barged in with a ringing endorsement backed up by the old lie, “America…a Judeo-Christian nation, ought to bring its founding document in line with what he says is God's word, particularly on matters of a woman's right to choose and a couple's right to marry.”

I won’t belabor the rest of the conversation, but anyone who knows Dobson, Perkins and their organization knows where it was going. They dominated the conversation guiding the discussion toward their favorite topics, gay marriage and abortion. It’s not surprising , as that is their whole reason for existence. The Family Research Council, with it’s scientific sounding name is nothing more than a far right think tank, and as such it’s job is to disseminate information supporting its causes.

My question is this, why was there no one from a GLBT think tank on that panel? More specifically, why are there so few GLBT think tanks?

The answer I suspect lies in the same thinking that dominates most liberal and progressive thinking. That is, money spent on policy groups, think tanks and infrastructure could better be spent on good works, good causes and political support. That thinking is the Achilles heel of the liberal and progressive movement and the GLBT movement as well. Yes, there are a few groups like the Center for American Progress and Brookings Institution who regularly provide talking points and research papers for use by liberal and progressive policymakers, but they pale in light of their many right-wing counterparts.

Yes, there is the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, but they are not represented in every discussion of marriage and GLBT rights in the media. One organization cannot do it alone. We need a number of very aggressive and quite frankly stealthy groups like the Heritage Foundation and the Institute for Policy Analysis to carry our cause forward. We need our own version of the Family Research Council to provide lawmakers and the press with research and well-crafted policy statements that can affect the lawmaking process.

Now before I am accused of using the same dirty tricks that the right-wingnuts use, let me clarify a little. My point is about a subject near and dear to my heart and that is framing. As George Lakhoff makes abundantly clear in his book, Don't Think of an Elephant: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate, the real secret of changing public perception is to change the way the issue is discussed. Allowing the right to frame the debate immediately puts us liberals on the defensive. Even our name, “liberal” has been so successfully demonized by the right, that many call themselves “progressives” instead.

Having a few GLBT issue think tanks that can successfully frame the issues without sounding like GLBT activists could really make a difference in our cause. If you don’t believe framing makes a difference, look at the issue of “gay marriage”. Had we pushed the issue of equal rights under law, rather than the right to marry, we might already have it. When we use the term “marriage” it is charged with a lot of issues, and for many heterosexuals it implies sex. Face it, a lot of people are homophobic, they do not like to think about what we do in the bedroom, and pushing the issue of marriage makes the bedroom front and center.

Those same people might very well be swayed with an issue of human rights, and the right to marry would follow as a natural legal embodiment of those rights, but they would not have to think about it. After all Human Rights is the real issue. Marriage is just a legal construct that reflects the inequality just as serving n the military. Framing the issues as a human rights issues avoids the “ick” factor for many people and is much harder to argue against. Consider if the civil rights movement had made interracial marriage their key issue? We would still be drinking from separate water fountains, at least in the South.

Now who is going to step forward and come up with the funding to create some of these think tanks? Well I suspect there are not a lot of GLBT billionaires that would come forward, but you never know. It will probably take the work and funds of a whole lot of people to make that idea a reality, still why not give it a try?

Stephen Colbert Portrait Hangs At Smithsonian!

Life imitates art and art imitates life. Hard to tell which one is doing the impersonations, but Stephen Colbert now has his portrait hanging in the Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian National Gallery in Washington, DC.

The portrait hangs as part of a spoof that Colbert did as he tried to get the Smithsonian to accept his portrait into their collection. The director of the gallery finally acceded to Colbert’s request and hung the painting temporarily. It sits between the restrooms above a drinking fountain. Not a bad location for a fake pundit!

Now crowds are turning up to see it and the portrait is having the unexpected effect of bringing people to the gallery who might not otherwise visit. Sounds like a win-win situation.

Click here to see the portrait at the National Portrait Gallery web site. This link may expire in a few months.

Writers & Producers May Resume Negotiations Monday

News comes tonight that the Writer’s Guild may resume negotiations with producers following the settlement of the Director’s Guild contract. Producers walked away from the table early last month, but now that there is what may be a template for a deal with the DGA, they have agreed to return to the talks.

More as it develops.

Blast From The Past - Jon Stewart 10 Years Ago!

Last night on "A" Daily Show, Stewart had a flash back segment and showed himself 10 years ago commenting on the Monica-gate. Watch it!

Mystery Votes Show Up In New Hampshire Recount!

While the other candidates are campaigning in Nevada, Dennis Kucinich or at least his people are recounting votes in New Hampshire. The news is not good! The machine counts in at least one ward are off by a lot of votes!

Take Ward 5 in Manchester, New Hampshire:

Diebold Result
CLINTON 683 EDWARDS 255 OBAMA 404

Hand Count
CLINTON 619 EDWARDS 217 OBAMA 365

Diebold is over-counting votes in at least one ward and there is no clue as to who the extra votes went. Other Wards seem to be OK so far, but the count is still under way. BradBlog has more.

Additionally, many votes were not counted because voter used the "wrong kind of pen" to mark their ballots. Watch out in South Carolina! There they have paperless voting machines!

Jonah Goldberg, Nazi Happy Faces & A Daily Show

Watching the chopped up interview with Jonah Goldberg on “A” Daily Show the other night I realized just what was happening. Jon Steward prefaced the segment with the statement that the interview ran 18 minutes and it was going to be “choppy as hell”, but what he failed to mention was that Goldberg was a tool of the Neocon machine. His book, “Liberal Fascism” is an attempt to redefine the term “Progressive” in the same way the right has redefined “liberal”.

Stewart even says toward the end of the segment, “can we use any of this?” I suspect he is referring to the impossible task of trying to get Goldberg to admit what his agenda really is. He is remarkably adroit at staying on message even in the face of absolute proof that he is wrong. His equating Mussolini with progressivism is beyond ridiculous, it’s patently false and yet he defends it with a smile.

Stewart was faced with the problem of trying to explain how silly Goldberg sounded even while Goldberg denied his own premise. No wonder the interview went on 18 minutes!

The crux of all this is a glimpse of the lies and distortions we can expect to see in the coming year from the GOP and their toadies. We will see Obama painted as a Muslim, which he is not. Hillary painted as a shrew, which she is not and everyone else tainted as a “Liberal or Progressive” as though it is a dirty word. Stay tuned.

Iraq Government At A Stalemate - Now Will They Listen?

When I look at the stalemate in the Iraq government I have to remind myself of my experiences in Mexico. Now, before I get hate mail, I would never equate the democracy in Mexico with Iraq, however there is an interesting analogy about some of the attitudes I found while living and working there. First what is happening in Iraq.

According to an article in the Washington Post written by the national security adviser to the Iraqui government, Mowaffak al-Rubaie, "it has been impossible to maintain a political consensus on many important issues." He goes on to say, "the current political framework is based on a pluralistic democratic vision that, while admirable, is entirely unsuited to resolving this three-way divide."

The gist of the article is a call for a Federalism rather than a pluralistic democracy, and the funny thing is, that is exactly what many critics in the US have always called for, a 3-state federal system that recognizes the ethnic divisions rather than ignores them. And for this we had to wait years?

Now comes the Mexico part. While working in Mexico, I often found that my suggestions were accepted gracefully and then ignored while the people I was advising struggled to find an alternative to my suggestion. In some cases they did reach "work-arounds" that were actually acceptable, but more often they struggled and finally came around to using the suggestion I gave.

As a consultant I was hired to make those suggestions, therefore I am not trying to assert any super intelligence in the matter, but my frustration was that there seemed to be an insistence to go-it-alone first. Ironically, after all the sturm und drang, they usually thanked me for my suggestion and lauded my work.

Now do you see the analogy? The Iraqi government has heard criticism and suggestions of a federalist solution from not only the US not other countries. After a lot of struggle, they finally come around to the same conclusion. Why didn’t they just consider taking the advice first? Who knows? That will be one of the great mysteries of the Middle East I suppose.

Of course the same thing could be said for our government and its insistence that a pluralistic democracy was the answer without taking into consideration the facts on the ground and the best advice of its experts. I guess there are just as many mysteries in the West as the East.

Huckabee Equates Homosexuality With Bestiality - Huh?

So Mike Huckabee has finally come out of the closet! No not that closet! He has exposed himself as being very much a fringe fanatic when it comes to religion. In an interview with Beliefnet.com, he makes the unequivocal comparison between homosexuality and bestiality. In his own words when asked about his statement that he would bring Biblical conformity to the Constitution, he says:
"Well, I don’t think that’s a radical view to say we’re going to affirm marriage. I think the radical view is to say that we’re going to change the definition of marriage so that it can mean two men, two women, a man and three women, a man and a child, a man and animal."
That’s about as clear as it gets, change marriage to allow same sex partners and it’s the same as allowing bestiality or pedophilia?

Huckabee who has masqueraded as a reasonable voice is now shown for what he is. He is a far right religious fundamentalist far out of step with mainstream America. His fringe views may play in parts of Iowa, but he would be a disaster in the White House.

Racist Obama Joke Falls Flat In Denver

Sometimes it is heartening to hear of people’s reactions when they are exposed to blatant racism. At the National Western Stock Show's annual Citizen of the West banquet in Denver, businessman William R. Farr was pretending to read congratulatory telegrams to this year’s winner.

He pulled out a telegram supposedly from the White House, then paused and said, "I have a telegram from the White House." Then he added, "They're going to have to change the name of that building if Obama's elected."

People attending the event said there were audible gasps from the audience which included city and state officials. That gasp shows hope to me. I have attended events where similar insensitive and racist or homophobic jokes are made from the microphone and most of the time they go with an uncomfortable chuckle. The fact they people were appalled by his remark tells me that we have matured a lot as a country.

Years ago, racist jokes were the norm but today they just don’t play, unless you are speaking in front of an audience of KKK members. What that says is our country just might be ready for an African American president, and it'’ about time.

Republican Terrorist Fundraiser Indicted By State Department

Mark Siljander Representative from Michigan 1981-87 was charged with money laundering, conspiracy and obstruction of justice, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The charges stem the accusation of sending more than $130,000 to an Al Qaida and Taliban supporter who threatened U.S. troops in Afghanistan. According to a story in Michigan News, he allegedly lied about lobbying senators on behalf of an Islamic charity that authorities said was secretly sending funds to terrorists.

A former Fabius Township Board trustee, Siljander served in the state House of Representatives from 1977 to 1981. Siljander then served three terms in Congress until he was defeated by U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, in the Republican primary in 1986. In 1987, President Ronald Reagan appointed Siljander to serve as U.S. delegate to the United Nations for one year.

More as this develops.

Giuliani Trails Ron Paul In Primary - Huh?

Romney wins Michigan! Big news? I don’t think so. He only gets half the delegates he would had the state not moved their primary up in violation of both party rules. Additionally, look at the results for the other candidates in the GOP. McCain second and Huckabee third….and where’s Giuliani? Well, he ran behind the slightly wacko Ron Paul and just ahead of “uncommitted”.

If memory serves, wasn’t Rudy the guy to beat? Wasn’t he “America’s Mayor” and the almost preordained GOP nominee? Not so much apparently. I think the public is tired of his mantra of “9-11” and ready to move on. Now maybe so should he.

Rudy has spent around $40 million in his quest and he can’t do better? That should tell him something, but I know politicians egos are often much larger than their common sense. So, over the next few weeks we can expect to hear more “9-11” from Giuliani and watch him slowly slide into oblivion.

Rush Limbaugh Starts Peppering His Remarks About Obama With "Spade"

So now Rush "The Gasbag" Limbaugh is starting to smear Barack Obama with coded messages in his rants. It isn’t the first time he has done this. He often refers to Obama emphasizing his middle name "Hussein" as a way to plant doubt in the minds of his listeners and now he goes another step further.

In a recent rant, Limbaugh starts using the term "spade". Buried in his text the term comes up several times, as well as "hoe" and personally I cannot believe it’s an accident. Limbaugh is terrified by the prospect of Barack Obama as president. As a racist, the thought of an African-American in power terrifies him and he knows it will energize his audience. Look at the transcript of a segment of his show.

"Obama is holding his own against both of them [Bill and Hillary Clinton], doing more than his share of the 'spadework,' maybe even gaining ground at the moment, using not only the spade, ladies and gentlemen. But when he finishes with the spade in the garden of corruption planted by the Clintons, he turns to the hoe. And so the spadework and his expertise, using a hoe. He's faring well."

I have to wonder how long it will take him to begin adding "niggardly" into his text?

Citigroup Hemorrhaging Again

If you ever need further proof that we are in a recession, look at Citigroup. It’s losses made it to around $10 billion in the fourth quarter and though there are Asian and Middle Eastern investors eager to bail the institution out, the loss will mean a cut of thousands of jobs. They have been hit hard for the second straight quarter by defaults in the mortgage market and that means subprime loans given to customers with poor credit history.

So what is the root of all this mess? Well corporate greed and the need to make those projections look good for Wall Street. Who cares if we are loaning money to people who will have no chance of paying it back? If it makes the bottom line look good for this quarter I still get my bonus! I suspect that is the thinking of the executives who got Citigroup and the other lenders into trouble in the first place.

I wonder when common sense will finally begin to permeate the board room and the MBAs with their spins and schemes will be tossed out on their ear. Yea like that will ever happen!

Golden Globes or Lead Balloon?

The Golden Globes looked more like the commentary on a sports show last night as the once glittering affair turned into a tag-team press conference with Billy Bush of "Access Hollywood" and Mary Hart of "Entertainment Tonight". With little fanfare and no acceptance speeches, the awards took all of one hour to announce. The audience was unseen and mostly consisted of the press.

Why the toned down affair? Well unless you are living under a rock, it was the latest success by the Writers Guild strike! The WGA successfully convinced their brothers and sisters in the Screen Actors Guild to agree to not cross their picket lines. Thus a glittering red carpet and searchlight affair looked more like an edition of "Access Hollywood".

On a positive note, the program ended on time!

Additionally the Directors Guild may be reaching an agreement with the producers regarding internet royalties and if they do, it could signal a possible solution for the WGA and the producers as well. We’ll see!

"Naked Festival" Posters Pulled From Japanese Railways

Looks like a Japanese bear party to me! The ancient festival called Somin in Japan advertises it’s main event with posters on Japanese trains, but this year the railway refused saying the posters amounted to sexual harassment.

According to Mainichi Daily News:

"The Oshu Municipal Government had sought permission from the Morioka branch of JR East to display the posters advertising Kokuseki Temple’s Somin Festival at stations, but JR East said the posters could not be displayed unless the images were changed.

"As sexual harassment becomes more of a problem, the standards for displaying posters in public spaces are becoming stricter," a representative of the Morioka branch of JR East explained. "It wasn’t just that it was out of line because there was nakedness; the pictures showed things that were particularly unpleasant for women, such as chest hair, and it was decided that showing them things they didn’t want to see was sexual harassment."

I just want to find out how to get there next year!

Countrywide CEO Gets Lavish Perks - Company Fails, But CEO Wins!

I have to wonder just how one joins the Billionaire Boys Club that is Corporate America. Angelo Mozilo, the CEO of failed mortgage lender Countrywide, could be leaving with a sizable severance package valued at $115 million after the sale to Bank of America is complete. This, to the head of a company that crashed and burned because of lame-brained loan practices like adjustable rate mortgages for people who had dodgey credit.

He will also be entitled to receive other benefits, including office space, secretarial support, use of the company's aircraft, financial consulting services and payment of annual country club dues as well as continued health care benefits for life!

Damn, when I had my own company and we lost money, I took home less money as well. Guess I didn’t go to the right school or belong to the right fraternity?

Bush's Last Year As President

As Bush travels to the Middle East and visits with Sheiks and other wealthy heads of the UAE, the remainder of the world including most Americans are awaiting his exit from the world stage. The recent trips are obviously attempts to polish his legacy yet any substantive results are unlikely. I have to wonder how the world would see someone like Barack Obama as President. I suspect he would send a very hopeful signal to the world that the United States was returning to its role as a bastion of real democracy and not just a bully with lots of weaponry.

OJ Violates Terms Of Bail - Will He Finally Go To Jail?

I was tired of hearing about OJ long before his latest bout of legal troubles. Now he has violated the terms of his bail, and has been taken into custody again. This time for trying to talk a co-defendant out of cooperating in a Las Vegas armed robbery case. Seems like OJ just can’t stay out of trouble.

The court does not take kindly with trying to tamper with co-defendants testimony, and I suspect that without Johnnie Cochran to play another “race card” this time OJ will be toast.

Do I feel sorry for him? Sort of. He was a guy that really had a good thing before he “allegedly” killed his wife and her friend. What makes people do those “alleged” things is a mystery to me. The only thing I can figure is that he was so full of his own fame that he felt immune to the laws that govern the little folks like us. Sort of like our President and VP, writing signing statements and making up the law as they go.

Televangelists Hinn & Hilliard Jump Ship At ORU

So the televangelists are jumping ship at Oral Roberts University. Benny Hinn and I.V. Hilliard are the latest to leave the board of regents of the school. Previously Jesse Duplantis and Creflo Dollar bailed after Richard Roberts, Oral Roberts’ son, stepped down. The school has been the center of controversy involving Richard Roberts faced allegations he misspent school funds to bankroll a lavish lifestyle.

Benny Hinn as you may or may not remember made a series of prophecies in the Mid 1990’s the most controversial of which was God will destroy America's homosexual community in 1995. Well Benny, some folks may have forgotten that but I didn’t and let me say, we’re queer, we’re here, still!

And for those of you who might want a little taste of Mr. Hinn's style, I found this on YouTube!

Teen Gay-Bashes Straight Couple! Say What?

Not only are some homophobic people intolerant, but they are blind as bats! An Irish teenager is under arrest in a weird twist on a gay bashing. He assaulted a straight man and his date, a woman with short cropped hair, because he thought they were both guys.

The 16 year old bigot, shouted at the couple, calling them "fucking gay bastards" and knocked them to the ground kicking them in the street. Dublin police arrested the teen, and the couple are making a full recovery. I guess this reinforces the phrase "blind hatred".

Bush Staff Tries To Spin His Flat-Line Ratings

As Bush makes a lame trip to the Holy Lands, he seems intent on salvaging his legacy. I personally feel that train left the station years ago, however his aides are trying to spin it with a positive edge. They predict he will leave office with higher approval ratings.

Again on a personal note, maybe they are speaking about people approving that he is leaving office?

Kucinich Request Recount In New Hampshire - Suspects Electronic Voting Machine Problems

Dennis Kucinich, an outspoken advocate for election integrity, paper-ballot elections, and campaign finance reform, has sent a letter to the New Hampshire Secretary of State asking for a recount of Tuesday’s election. Kucinich believes there are "unexplained disparities between hand-counted ballots and machine-counted ballots." He does not think the recount will improve his standing in the primary, but stated, "this is not about my candidacy or any other individual candidacy. It is about the integrity of the election process."

BradBlog.com notes that 80% of New Hampshire's ballots have been "counted" only by a hackable, prone-to-error, Diebold optical-scan machine. This is the same machine shown being hacked in the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary Hacking Democracy. In that film results of a live mock election were flipped via the gaming of the machine's memory card.

Kucinich probably has no chance of winning the nomination, but he does have a chance to help assure that our votes count. For that I applaud him, and sincerely hope he will continue to campaign. His voice has kept some serious issues before the public.

Iranian Boat Threat May Not Have Been Iranians - Pentagon Backtracks

Funny how on the day of the New Hampshire primary the news broke that Iranian boats had threatened a US Naval Ship in international waters. Lots of hoopla about the intercepted radio transmission that stated, "I am coming to you…You will explode after a few minutes." The pentagon confirmed it and the Navy said they had video! On my God! Sure hope someone who is tough on terrorists is elected in the primary!

Well, funny story. That transmission apparently was intercepted in on an international "bridge to bridge" channel, but the voices sounded Arab not Iranian. Now the Navy says they cannot make any direct connection to Iran. Yet Tuesday there were lots of bold statements against Iran and veiled threats. In fact the Navy now says, We’re saying that we cannot make a direct connection to the boats there. It could have come from the shore, from another ship passing by…"

How convenient that there was a big kurfuffel on the day of the primaries that now turns out to have been less of a threat than first publicized. Am I the only one who sees this as another Bush administration hoax to try to influence Americans? Remember the "yellow cake uranium"?

Richardson Drops Out Of Presidential Race

Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico, is throwing in the towel for the Democratic nomination. After very disappointing showings in both Iowa and New Hampshire. He never gained more than 5% of the vote and ran a distant 4th in both states. Richardson will have to step down as Governor in 2010 because of term limits and many think his presidential bid was strictly a reputation builder for a later run at a future date.

Bill O'Reilly Restrained By Secret Service After Altercation With Oabama

Watch it as Keith Olbermann gives the details of O'Reilly's wacko tactics. Also as a bonus, we get to see Sean Hanity chased by Ron Paul supporters through the streets!

Clinton & Obama Draw Independent Voters In New Hampshire

Hillary pulled out a victory even she thought she couldn’t win as she squeaked by Barack Obama in New Hampshire. This keeps her in the race for the long run and that is indeed news, however for me the big news was the voter turnout and the way people who consider themselves "independents" voted. Early exit polls showed more than 6 out of 10 voted in the Democratic primary. Encouraging for the Obama camp was that 41% of independents voted for Obama.

Clinton’s biggest push apparently came from women voters who made, as many of them revealed, a last minute choice to vote for Hillary. The pundits who claimed Hillary’s "cracking voice" (she did not cry as some reported) would doom her are finding out that it was that moment that made the difference for many woman voters.

From New Hampshire the battle moves on to Nevada and South Carolina where the voters are much different than those in New Hampshire. Should be interesting to see.

Record Turnout In New Hampshire For Democrats - Running Out Of Ballots

They are scrambling to find ballots for the Democratic Primary in New Hampshire. The number of voters at the polls has overwhelmed the precincts. Clerks say that the election officials are authorized to make copies of the ballots should they run too low.

According to eyewitnesses there are traffic jams at the polls. Additionally, many polling places are equally inundated with campaign workers making last minute pitches outside the polling places.

Giuliani Now Thinks It's OK For Americans To Speak Spanish

Need more proof Giuliani is a jerk? How about this? He campaigns relentlessly against undocumented immigration and insists that American Citizens should speak English. Today his campaign released their first TV ad in Spanish!

So now we get to hear him repeat over and over again “nueve once” as he tries to be “Alcalde de América”. Note to Rudy: Go back to doing drag, at least doing that you were funny.

UA and Now Weinsteins Making Deals with Striking Writers

Not only has United Artists made a separate deal with the striking Writers Guild of America, but no the independent Weinstein Company has apparently struck a deal.

The film studio run by Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob, held talks with the guild around Christmas. Now they are considering a proposal that would allow writers to resume work, according to a story in the New York Post.

I have to wonder why no deal has been struck with the producers of the Daily Show and The Colbert Report. On air last night, Jon Stewart stated that his parent company would be interested in getting back to the negotiating table. Until then both of those shows are going ad-lib without writers.

Circuit City - A Painfully Slow Death of a Company

Talk about a slow motion death…Circuit City is dripping toward extinction like cold molasses. Today they reported that same store sales for December dropped 11.4% and according to the company CEO it was "in line with expectations."

Anyone with a brain could tell you that Circuit City was in trouble. Back in March when the ruthlessly axed 3400 employees (many commissioned salespeople) and replaced them with minimum wagers. For this dumb move the company rewarded it’s executives with $1 million retention bonuses an amount equal to 35 years pay of the fired employees.

At this rate expect to see more store closings and more bonuses for the top executives as they try to bleed the company dry before jumping ship. Am I the only one who can see this or is Wall Street blind? I would think the shareholders of Circuit City would be at the gates with pitchforks and torches.

Dr. Phil Cancels Britney Spears Exploitation Show

Dr. Phil has cancelled his Brit-sploitation TV special after Britney’s parents pulled the plug. Previously they had agreed to go on the show and talk about their meal ticket’s declining mental state, but now have taken the posture that they are furious with Dr. Phil for blabbing about his visit to the starlet in the hospital.

Of course Britney’s parents may have pulled the plug on the show, but they haven’t done anything to pull the plug on Britney’s escapades. After she checked herself out of the hospital, she has popped up in Palm Springs with a 35-year-old paparazzo. Personally, I would think a media pimp would be the last person Britney needs to be hanging around with. If her family is serious about helping her, they would get her committed to a real rehab clinic and wean her off the glitz, the coke and booze.

As far as Dr. Shill? Well he would be well advised to go back to doing his talk show and stay out of Britney’s life for now.

UPDATE: Seems her new boyfriend, a paparazzo named Adnan Ghalib, is peddling racy pictures of Britney to news outlets. Great! Another blood sucker finds a prey.

Obama Widens Lead In New Hampshire

As the primary starts in New Hampshire, polls show Obama pulling away from Hillary Clinton with a 13 point lead. As the day progresses, I personally expect that lead to widen even more.

According to a Reuter's story, "Obama led Clinton in all categories of voters except women and voters over the age of 65, and was pulling away from the New York senator among base Democratic voters."

"A" Daily Show Returns - Jon Stewart Explains The Writer's Strike

Last night the Daily Show returned, or as Jon Stewart said, “without the writers it is simply ‘A’ Daily Show”. Clearly unhappy to be back on the air, Stewart ad-libbed his way through the program and made numerous references to the writer’s and his obvious solidarity with the strike.

Finally, he did a segment where he explained the demands and why the Producers were unwilling to budge. It is both funny and absolutely accurate.

Obama Speaks to Overflow Crowds In Lebanon, New Hampshire

Barack Obama continues to bring out overflow crowds in New Hampshire. Here is a video take outside the hall where he was speaking in Lebanon, NH. The crowd outside was unable to get in due to fire marshal limits. The energy of his campaign and the people drawn to him is an inspiring sight.

Golden Globes Cancelled! Award Show Falls To Writer's Strike

The Writer’s Guild Strike has it’s first casualty. The Golden Globe Awards Show on NBC was cancelled and the entire event was scrapped. Instead of the overblown show, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will hand out awards in a news styled announcement and have interviews with winners.

No writers, no show! As the writers score a big hit on network revenues there has been movement on negotiations with United Artists, an MGM subsidiary that has resumed talks with the striking writers. Here’s hoping all the producers return to the bargaining table or the Academy Awards may also be in jeopardy.

McCain Says America Would Be OK With Troops Staying in Iraq for 100 Years

John McCain, formerly the Straight Talk Express, has become the double talk express in recent months. The latest example of his “I back the Bush administration” posture is seen in this clip of a New Hampshire town hall meeting. When asked if he is OK with the US staying in Iraq for “50 years” as Bush has stated, McCain ups the ante and figures that no one would be upset if we stayed there 100 years. Then he tries to compare it with South Korea or Japan.

The difference is that there is no war currently going on in those countries and we reached a truce with North Korea and a surrender with Japan. In Iraq we are in the middle of a civil war, big difference! McCain either thinks the American people are so naive that we can’t tell the difference between the two or he is delusional. Once again a good reason to send John off to retirement rather than give him the reigns of the White House.

Crowds In New Hampshire For Obama - Video

If you want any more proof that Obama can energize people, I found this video on YouTube of thousands of people standing in the snow waiting to see him in New Hampshire. Look at their faces. Many of them look like this might be their first experience in politics and that spells hope for our country!

Obama Surges Ahead In New Hampshire Polls

The Obama train is rumbling over contenders in New Hampshire as he gains a 10 point lead in a Zogby poll just a day prior to the primary. Things in New Hampshire look like a replay of Iowa. Clinton and Edwards are again fighting it out for second place.

Though I have criticized Obama for a few missteps in the past I still find him an inspiring and hopeful voice for America’s future. That is exactly what we need after 8 years of a CEO president like Bush, who plays the congress and country like a bunch of addled stockholders. Lies and deceit may work on Wall Street, but it is not a way to run a country.

As for Obama, the worst criticism I hear is that he doesn’t have enough experience. To that I respond with a resounding "bunk"! His experiences in Illinois and his experience as a Senator have given him a taste of Washington without tainting him with the baggage of the other candidates. American’s really want change, and electing another dynasty like Clinton is not the way to do it. American’s want a President they can look up to and be inspired by, after years of having to hang our heads in shame over the lying and bumbling of Bush.

Since I heard him at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, I knew Obama was a figure to be reckoned with. His statesmanship and vision are contagious and that will propel him into the White House.
He energizes a new generation of voters and in a time when many older voters have become cynical that any change is possible, that energy is what our country needs.

Watching his victory speech in Iowa, I knew I was watching a historic moment. Not just because he won the caucus, but because he spoke to the hearts and souls of America. Now I sincerely hope New Hampshire and the other states feel that greatness and continue to join the wave of hope Obama is spreading across the country.

Dr. Phil Hops On The Britney Bandwagon

Just when you thought it was safe to pick up a newspaper without seeing Britney Spears on the cover, she has an emotional meltdown and is strapped to a gurney and hauled to the psych ward. If that publicity wouldn’t make it tough enough for the troubled young starlet to get the help she needs, now Dr. Phil is hitching his star to her out-of-control wagon.

Seems the good doctor visited Spears as she was checking out of the hospital. So what did he council her to do? Get away from the press? Get into serious rehab? Nope, he wants her to appear on another media event where he will show the world her downward spiral and air her troubles before the public for a buck!

Yea, that’s what Britney needs, more publicity as she crashes and burns. Dr. Phil sees it as an intervention, but anyone else would see it as a ratings ploy, and with the writer’s strike hobbling the networks, it’s just what they want! Box office boffo, and to hell with Britney and her well being!

Hollywood spawns some strange personalities, and Spears is one of the strangest. A pretty girl with a litle talent and lots of publicity who has absolutely no one around her who will tell her "no". Sounds like the plot of a made for Lifetime movie, and with Dr. Phil’s help it just might end up that way.

My advice? "Leave Britneyalone!" And to Dr. Phil..."have you no shame?"

New Years TV Shows - Dallas Vs. New York

Now that the hangovers are all healed and the confetti swept up it’s time to really look at New Year’s Eve celebrations on TV and ask the important questions.

First, when will Dick Clark retire. I have great sympathy for the man, but he looks terrible and speaks worse than my mother after her second stroke. I found the act of watching him painful in the extreme. Call me politically incorrect, but I would rather remember Dick Clark as he looked on American Bandstand! I think it’s great that he has recovered from whatever medical condition he has but if I were a sponsor, I would pull my ads in a minute.

Second, the televised coverage from Victory Plaza in Dallas was glitzy and fun and would make a logical successor to the East Coast Times Square blowout, however it would be better if the hosts were given something to say. The adlibs were beyond lame and most of the time Dale Hansen and his pals just seemed confused and dazed. Well after all it was New Year’s Eve, maybe they had a little too much “cheer”? Aside from that the high tech screens and impressive fireworks finale made the Dallas New Year’s Eve show on WFAA much more entertaining than Dick Clark in New York. Now if they could just get a better band and a writer for the Dallas show they’d have a hit!

Pat Robertson Says God Told Him Who Will WIn In 2008. Sounds Like Bad News For The GOP!

Pat Robertson, the televangelist, has a direct conduit to God, at least according to him. This week he said in an interview on Hanity & Colmes that God told him who would win the 2008 Election for President. When pressed for the answer he began tap dancing around the issue. However, from what his answers implied, it won't be a Republican. I for one hope he heard right!

Pope Evicts Vatican Observatory

For the past 75 years the Castle Gandolfo, the Popes summer residence has been home to the Vatican observatory. Now, the telescopes and scientists are being evicted. Seems the Pope needs more room to receive diplomats.

Personally I think this marks a milestone in the relationship between science and the church. Formerly, there was a quest for knowledge, even in the orthodoxy of the Catholic Church. Now the new Pope brings his fundamentalist overtones to the Vatican. With that comes the end of intellectual curiosity.

The observatory will still exist, but it is being exiled to a convent far away from the Pope. More than a symbolic move, this just adds fire to the argument that Benedict XVI wants no part of real science. His speech affirming the bogus science of “Intelligent Design” was a big step away from real science.

Pundits See McCains Stunning Loss As Victory?

If you ever wanted a sign the John McCain was a “movement conservative” in disguise, just take a look at what the right wing pundits are saying about his stunning 4th place loss in Iowa.

Fox News’ Greta van Susteren: “I can’t think of anyone happier tonight than Sen. John McCain.”

Politico’s Mike Allen: “Tonight is a fantastic night for John McCain. … He’s one of the biggest winners of the night.”

Newsweek’s Jon Meacham: “To me, the great story about Sen. McCain is, when in doubt, give principle a try.”

Fox News’ Carl Cameron: “Inside Washington, he’s been a real maverick outsider.”

Say what? Huckabee hits a home run with the fundamentalists in Iowa and the story is McCain? Boy this smacks of “talking points”. Why do I get the feeling these guys are getting faxes with the GOP official spin ? I have long believed that the Neocons want McCain in the White House and I really think he made a deal with them. Remember when he was a maverick? Now he totes the party line. What happened? Backroom deal is my guess.

The big news from Iowa was Obama. Record turn out and a sound thrashing of both Edwards and Clinton. Now that’s a story!

Iowa Democrats Swarm To Caucuses - Record Turnout!

The real story in Iowa was the turnout on the Democratic side. Last election 124,000 people showed up for the caucuses but last night a whopping 220,588 appeared. That shows something beyond the appeal of the candidates to me, it shows an energy in the Democratic party and from the statistics it’s a young energy.

I watched the returns and coverage on CNN and the faces of the caucus goers was younger than I have seen in the past. That new energy is what propelled Obama into first place. He is overwhelmingly favored by younger voters and the fact that they turned out gives me hope.

On the Republican side, it was business as usual. Huckabee, playing to the evangelical base won handily over Romney. That will change in New Hampshire where there are fewer fundamentalists, so I feel Huckabee’s victory will be short lived.

That is just as well. The lop sided voter turnout for Democrats in Iowa looks like the country is tired of the GOP machine and is beginning to stand up and make a difference. My hope is that the trend on the Democratic side continues. I also hope that the vision set out by Obama can fire up voters across the nation when the election comes. America has to change direction!

Obama Wins Iowa - Video of Speech

For those of you who missed it. Obama's speech last night was historic. Give it a listen!

Yet Another Heterosexual Pedophile! When Will It Stop?

We have got to stop letting these heterosexuals teach our kids. They are pedophiles and sexual predators!

Yet another heterosexual pedophile, this one a wrestling coach, has been convicted of molesting two teenage girls from Frisco, Texas on a bus trip. He apparently sat between them and put a sleeping bag over their laps to hide the sexual assaults which took place in Kansas and Missouri.

Those of you who detect a note of irony in my post are correct. It seems that people like "Focus on the Family" try to blame all child molestation on gays when in fact the majority of sexual predators are heterosexual. It’s all about trying to set the record straight, (no pun intended) and re-framing the issue!

Wrongly Convicted Man Free After Serving 27 Years

Dallas, my home town, has the unique distinction of being in a county with the most number of wrongfully convicted inmates. In the zeal of our county prosecutors, dozens of men and women have been convicted of crimes they did not commit and were later exonerated through DNA evidence. That is a sad legacy which I suspect is tainted with residual racism from the early part of the 1950’s and 60’s.

The latest wrongfully convicted prisoner is Charles Chatman who spent 27 years in prison for a crime he has always said he didn’t commit. The Innocence Project of Texas and District Judge John Creuzot shepherded the appeal process and Chatman has finally been released. Before the crime is officially cleared from Chatman's record, the appeals court must accept the recommendation or the governor must grant a pardon. Either step is considered a formality after Creuzot's ruling.

He was the 15th inmate from Dallas County since 2001 to be freed by DNA testing and served more time than any of the other inmates. District Attorney Craig Watkins attributes the exonerations to a past culture of overly aggressive prosecutors seeking convictions at any cost. Watkins has started a program in which law students, supervised by the Innocence Project of Texas, are reviewing about 450 cases in which convicts have requested DNA testing to prove their innocence.

We need more public officials like Watkins and Creuzot who are concerned more about doing what is right than what is politically expedient. Thanks guys!

DOJ Probe Of CIA Tapes To Be Headed By John Durham

So it seems everyone is singing the praises of John Durham, the federal prosecutor chosen by new Attorney General Michael Mukasey to head up the CIA torture tape investigation. He is sited as being tough on crime and his record of pursuing criminals bears this out. He successfully prosecuted FBI agents in Boston and many of New England's Mafia bosses.

His appointment marks a hopeful turn in the CIA torture tape case. My only problem is the possibility of partisanship interfering with any meaningful investigation. Though colleagues say the registered Republican is non-partisan, he was recommended for this post by former boss, Kevin J. O'Connor. O’Connor was the U.S. attorney in Connecticut until he became an assistant to Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales shortly before Gonzales resigned last year. It is that connection with Alberto Gonzales that taints his appointment in my eyes.

Everyone knows Gonzales like all Bush appointees valued loyalty over everything else. Should Durham turn out to be a Bush loyalist, he will color his investigation to prevent any damage to the administration. Additionally, Durham has no experience with national security issues and cases involving executive authority. It remains to be seen how doggedly he will pursue leads that might point to the White House.

Writer's Strike Heads Toward Ratings Sweeps!

The Writer’s strike is about to move into really deep territory. As the new year begins the networks are looking at a February sweeps (rating period) with no new programs other than more crappy reality stuff. I suspect they will have to give back to advertisers several billion in revenues de to unfulfilled ratings estimates.

It would seem to me the time to negotiate is now. After all, everyone knows distribution of content is moving toward the web and internet, also known as "new media". Well that is what the strike is over. The writers are not idiots, hey know as well as everyone else that new media will be the preferred distribution of the future, and naturally they want some of the action. It’s only fair! You pay royalties and points to writers for broadcast distribution, why not over the web?

As the inventory of new programs runs out just before the sweeps, I expect the networks and the producers will be more than willing to go back to the table and bargain. In the meantime, the AMPTP folks (producers & networks) are mounting expensive PR campaigns to persuade the public that they are innocent babes. Hah!

Nobody buys that guff, so why not just save the cash and start talking contracts? For me and everyone I know, we stand in solidarity with the WGA!

Jeb Bush Implicated In Latest Florida Financial Mess

No offense to my friends who live in Florida, but your state is really f*#ked up. The latest proof comes in the gathering storm surrounding the money market debacle that involves Lehman Brothers and, (drum roll) Jeb Bush!

Seems George’s brother who as Governor was on the board overseeing Florida's State Board of Administration (SBA) and its $28 billion fund. (Much like a money market fund.) The problem has come from local municipalities staging what amounts to a "run on the bank". So far they have withdrawn $9 billion over fears that the fund has too much bad debt. A majority of this paper was sold to SBA by Lehman Brothers and now that he has left the Governor’s mansion, guess who settled into a consulting job with Lehman in August? Jeb Bush!

Now the fund is frozen and smaller municipalities face a crisis over the locked up funds. According to Forbes Magazine, Edward Siedle, a former Securities and Exchange Commission attorney who investigates money management wrongdoing and has worked on behalf of several Florida public pension funds, thinks this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Questions of when the debt was sold to the state and Bush’s involvement could get ugly. Stay tuned!

Saudi Blogger Held Prisoner WIthout Charges

Our alleged friends, the Saudis, run a tight ship of a country. So tight that the mere mention of dissention can result in detention without charges. Hum? That couldn’t ever happen here could it?

Aside from the ironic aspects of the story, a blogger named Fouad Al-Farhan is being held without charges for "interrogation for violating non-security regulations." So far he has been held incommunicado since December 10. A worldwide movement to free Fouad is starting to gain traction among bloggers but so far the US government has remained mute. No surprise there.

It would be a good idea to point out that most of the September 11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia, and Osama Bin Laden is himself a Saudi. Funding for radical Islamic causes continues to flow from the kingdom, a place rife with human rights violations. Sounds like the kind of allies we gravitate toward, doesn’t it?

Pope Says Gays Threaten World Peace?

Once again the Pope who found God’s grace after being a Hitler Youth has used his position to condemn gays and lesbians. Pope Benedict XVI in his first public address of 2008 called same-sex marriage a threat to world peace. His comments in part are directed at Spain which legalized same-sex marriage in 2005.

It seems odd that such a potential powerful force for peace and reconciliation seems bent on causing strife and discrimination.

Impeach Banner Prominent In Rose Parade Coverage on TV

Watching the Tournament of Roses Parade this morning my partner and I were pleasantly surprised to see a few details we might never have been able to see before. We watched the coverage broadcast on HDTN that was the feed from KTLA in Los Angeles. The Rose Parade in high definition is probably better than being there. First we could watch in our pajamas, and secondly we could see details so crisp that they would be invisible from almost any vantage-point on the parade route.

One detail which the cameras got plenty of coverage of, was the numerous signs held up by parade watchers. Directly across from the main camera platform were a group of people holding big banners that read “IMPEACH”. Additionally there were other that gave details, clearly visible in HDTV, stating, “Impeach Bush & Cheney for Crimes Against the United States”.

We saw these not once or twice but throughout the coverage of the parade along with a loyal group holding a Kucinich banner. I can not remember a time when I saw anything like this in previous parades, and I was surprised how prominent these IMPEACH signs were. It made a great start to a new year, and I only hope to see more and more of them in coming months. Even though Bush and Cheney will be out of office in a year, it is still vital to our democracy to hold them accountable for the lies and crimes committed against our country by these unscrupulous men.
