The list of these just keeps getting longer and rather than admit that then Cardinal Ratzinger did indeed help to keep child abusers in the priesthood, the Vatican just keeps quibbling.
I had an NPR Driveway Moment his evening listening to the story of a California priest who actually asked to be defrocked and was refused by the Vatican. This started in 1981 and after multiple letters and near pleading with the Vatican's doctrinal unit, run by Ratzinger, he was granted the move in 1987. Several letters show Ratzinger denied the defrocking for the "good of the universal Church".
