A Memphis church has decided to defame one of our great national symbols. The World Overcomers Outreach Ministry Church is erecting a 72-foot tall replica of the Statue of Liberty with a few modifications. Lady Liberty’s torch is being replaced by a cross and the Emma Lazarus poem about "Giving me your tired, your poor" is being replaced with the Ten Commandments.
If there was ever a frightening symbol of the growing theocracy in this country it’s being built in Memphis, Tennessee. It doesn’t take a genius to figure this travesty out. According to one news report, 11 year-old Evelyn Douglas said, " It's not right that they are mixing the two." (Referring to the cross representing a specific religion and the statue representing the United States.)
We are moving closer and closer to a theocratic dictatorship in this country, and for Christians like myself, I am very worried. I see the fundamentalists brand of Christianity and it bears no resemblance to the teachings of Jesus. This must be what Muslims in Saudi Arabia felt when the Wahabists began hijacking Islam.
The answer? For one thing we can vote the neo-cons who have aligned themselves with these extremists out of office in November. Don’t believe the cynics who say there is no difference between the parties. It’s a lie. The Democratic Party has many faults, but intolerance and bigotry is not one of them. Stop this growing state religion and vote in November like your freedom depended on it. It does!
