Boycott Cinemark - Supporters Of Prop 8

Add to the list of people and companies to boycott for supporting Proposition 8 in California, the local theater chain, Cinemark. Its CEO, Alan Stock, donated $9,999 to the cause that was designed to take away the right to marry in California.

I ran across this tidbit on AmericaBlog.com, and checked it through the San Francisco Gate website that searches a database of contributors to the Prop 8 funds. It's time we took our money and went elsewhere to see films! Now if we can get Sundance Film Festival to leave the Hate State of Utah perhaps some folks will notice.

  1. I don't get it. Why are we protesting Cinemark for what one guy did?

  2. As the CEO of the company he knows his actions will be considered representative of the company's views. His company is happy to get money fromm LGBT people but he want's to deny us equal rights. If you don't get the reasoning behind why sending him and his company a message is a valid response, I can't help you.

David asks "I don't get it. Why are we protesting Cinemark for what one guy did?"

Gay$ go to theater. Theater$ go to Cinemark. Cinemark$ go to CEO (and likely many other Mormon executives and investors). CEO$ go to political movement to strip Gay rights.

Gay$ --> goes to political movement to strip gay rights

  5. And besides, the last time I was at a Cinemark, they couldn't manage to get the film focused until half way through the movie. Numerous complaints and they still couldn't do it.

No more of my Gay$ for them!

    OK, I get it now.

    It is a stupid idea.

The logic is so screwed on this. This is what is wrong with our movement. Kill the forest to chop down one small tree? That's dumb.

I love how strong the gay rights movement is in this country now. As shocked, offended, and outraged as I was about the passing of prop 8, I am overwhelmingly grateful to see the whole country beginning to wake up and stand up. Thank you.

  10. Since this report speaks directly about the movie "MILK" and its relevance to today's issues, it seems worth remembering Milk's own feelings with Proposition 6. He felt that, if Prop. 6 was passed, that the gay community would rise up in an angry and perhaps violent offensive that would have been entirely understandable. The unfinished business of Milk's time is still affecting us today and it this generations responsibility to carry it forward.

We are not in the midst of a polite debate. We are not haggling over a trinket in a foreign bazaar. Prop 8 singles out gays. It strips them of rights. It undermines the very foundations of the Constitution of the country - which has no relationship to biblical belief or religious fanaticism. If gays are going to be singled out through the passage of this proposition, then the supporters of it should expect to be targeted themselves. If they are in positions of power, such as CEO of Cinemark, then the foundations of their power ought to be attacked and brought down.

Cinemark is fair game as is the Mormon Church. We are not engaged in a friendly disagreement. These people have mobilized to strip Americans they don't like or respect of their civil rights. That's not politics. That is war. Gays have learned how to fight back and we ought to throw our full fury at individuals who funded this fight against us AND their power bases - period.

Civil Rights or Civil War. Gay Rights Now!
